Canasta Terminology & Glossary

If you want to be a good Canasta player you will have to know Canasta Terminology. Below you will find a list of the most commonly used terms in the game of Canasta. Some of them are similar to terms that are used in rummy games.

•    Base – 4 natural cards that have the same exact rank

•    Black Canasta – A canasta that includes 1 to 3 wild cards

•    Black Three – One of either the 3 of spades or the 3 of clubs.

•    Canasta – One meld that features a minimum of 7 matching cards. It is also the name of this game.

•    Forced – The process in which you are forced to take a discard pile if you are able to.

•    Frozen – This term describes the impossibility to take a discard pile unless you have a natural pair.

•    Game – Term used for a minimum point total of 5000 points.

•    Go out – The process of getting rid of all of the cards that you have. You can achieve this by discarding or melding.

•    Go out concealed – You go out concealed if you did not make a meld before and you get rid of all cards in one move.

•    Minimum Count – The needed minimum point value that you need to meet in order to make your first meld.

•    Mixed Canasta – Canasta that contains 1 to 3 wild cards.

•    Natural – One card that is not a wild card. It is also the same name that a canasta that has no wild card has. Sometimes the canasta is known as Natural Canasta.

•    Partner – The player that is in a team with at least another player and will play against other team(s).

•    Prize Pile – One discard pile that at the moment is frozen.

•    Pure Natural – Describes one canasta that includes no wild card. The same canasta can also be known as red canasta.

•    Stop Card – A wild card or a black three that will stop the other player from taking a card from a discard pile when it is discarded.

•    Red Three – 3 of hearts or diamonds, each worth 100 points.

•    Wild Card – One card that you can use instead of any other card. In the game of canasta the wild card is a deuce or a joker.
